MALIN+GOETZ Mojito Lip Balm (full size, $12)
I can always use another lip balm! I like the smell and feel of this (it’s like a gel, rather than a chapstick). But it has the blistex-like applicator (flat tilted surface with a hole in the middle) – I never feel like those are all that clean or easy to apply. Regardless, I’m using it!
Manna Kadar Cosmetics Sheer Glo (sample, $7.83)
FIrst the good news: for shimmer that I am supposed to smear all over my face, it is amazing. I mix a little into my tinted moisturizer in the morning and it’s great. In the summer, I might just use a little as highlighter/blush, just for a little extra glow with minimal make-up. No smell, feels like lotion. The Manna website compares it to Benefit High Beam, but the Sheer Glo is much more pink (High Beam is more cream colored). I love this and will most likely purchase a full size when the sample runs out!
Hikari Cosmetics Mechanical Eye Liner (full size? $13.00)
The storm color is a nice light gray, which would be cool, but I get almost no color/product to come off on my eyelids. I’ve always found mechanical liners to be harder to use than kohl or liquid because I have to rub the pencil so hard that it is near impossible to be precise.
La Fresh Eco-Beauty Be Good. Good Day. Day Moisturizer (sample size – for sale $13.99)
Nice moisturizer – cool packaging (like a capri sun with a cap!) Because of the flat shape, it’s perfect for traveling. They do promote the product as eco-friendly (but ultimately, it may be too expensive for my tastes.)
Pacifica Natural Mineral Coconut Eye Shadow (full size, ~$6.00)
I received the darker treasure color, which is pretty much just gold. (Love it!) The shadow itself does not have much staying power, but it really is a great gold color… Do they not sell these eye shadows in singles? (I could only find sets). Well, thanks to ipsy (probably), there are MANY on ebay (unopened) for about $6.00 if you want to try it out!

TOTAL: 52.82  – best value yet!

TOTAL OF USABLE PRODUCTS: $33.82 (lip balm, sheer glo, and moisturizer)

Another month, another satisfied customer!

January Budget Breakdown

budget jan.

Baublebar Earrings: $8 (on sale from $28 plus $6 in reward dollars) – I love these already.

Pinkblush Burgundy Scarf and White/Gray Scarf (not pictured): $5 (originally $15 and $18, but also 25% off and a $25 gift card from a Peaches In A Pod giveaway – so basically I just paid shipping!)

The two scarves come at a strange time. I love the burgundy (with some gold threads) for fall (Christmas), while the white/gray scarf is almost all white, which will be great for late spring. But since it is currently 17º F, it’s blanket scarves for now….

Target Sweater Tights; $6 (on sale from $8) – a necessity

Loft Tights: $6 (on sale from $16) – slightly less practical….

Loft Striped Tank: $4 (on sale from $20) – saving until summer…

Loft Lou&Grey Shirt Dress: $20 (on sale from $80) – with tights, cute boots, and the right jewelry, that can be nice enough for casual work days!

Total PAID: $49.00 ($185 minus $25 in giftcards and $111 in savings)

This was a good month – I capitalized on a number of sales in order to get a few things that are practical (tights and tank), trendy (earrings), and good for work (dress). Style success!

I also managed to find some incredible deals and not overspend. Financial success!

January Budget Breakdown

December Ipsy (spoiler: meh…)

NYX Cosmetics Butter Lip Balm in Lady Fingers (full size, $3.99)

This could have been really nice – it’s a nice moisturizing balm with just a little color, but I did not like the Lady Fingers bright pink color. Perhaps one of the nude or burgundy colors would be better suited for me…

Bumble and bumble Straight Blow Dry (tiny travel size, $3.50)

I don’t know whether I am being too stingy with the product – or if travel and cold and foreign hairdryers are messing with me – but I don’t really see any difference when I use this.

CAILYN Cosmetics Just Mineral Eye Polish in Orchid (half size, $6.00)

Pretty color, but very similar to the peachy eyeshadow from a few months ago – plus the packaging is not travel-friendly and has an included brush (like nail polish). I don’t use brushes, so I’m not such a fan of that aspect, but if you like brushes…?

tarte deluxe lights, camera, lashes 4-in-1 mascara (full? size, $10.00)

Meh, didn’t even try. Plus, it’s SUPER tiny, but seems to be the same weight as the version for sale from ulta. Would be good for traveling. I just don’t really need mascara, especially since I have recently found a new favorite: Rimmel’s Scandal Eyes Rockin Curve Mascara ! The brush is super strangely curved, but the formula is great: not too clumpy, lengthening, thickening, and easy to wash off. Love.

Crown Brush Infinity Shadow/Crease Duet Brush (listed as $17.50, but sold for $6.99)

Don’t use. Could be nice?

*****

Ispy Total Cost: about $30.48 + the bag (It weirdly matches my Dooney and Burke purse – black with a pinkish inside! Seriously, the bags are the best part – I can’t get enough!)

Ipsy Total Value (things I actually use and like!): $3.50.

My least successful month. But I still love getting it in the mail. It gives me something to look forward to and it is helping me control my spending on beauty products. No nail polish bought since July. JULY! I did buy a new bottle of tinted face moisturizer (Aveeno, of course) when I ran out a few weeks ago, but that seems legit as it was a replacement, not an impulse purchase. So, ultimately, I think the Ipsy subscription is working even in month where the items are less successful….

TOTAL PAID OUT OF POCKET: $1,195.5

Holy Crap. That is a lot of stuff!

The good news? The averages aren’t too bad; Just less than $100 per month were spent on 2-3 clothes items. Plus, my nail polish obsession is getting better.

The bad news? That is a lot new stuff and a LOT of money. Crap. I’ve got to do better than this.

The other good news? I’ve definitely done better over the last few months than the first few month. I do a good job of shopping sales for staples (Sept and Dec, especially). There are a number of items that are core pieces in my wardrobe, like:

  • Most of the shoes
  • 2 of the Blazers (Sept. and Oct.)
  • The Gap Sweater, sneakers, and leggings from September
  • The Black Friday skirt

But there are some duds too:

  • All of May (those cheap necklaces were worth about as much as I paid…)
  • All the dresses
  • The Loft sweaters from January (itchy + bracelet sleeves are not winter friendly!)

The Last Good News: I feel like my style has really become more clear. I’m happy with my wardrobe and have virtually no true holes. Sure, I’ll continue to have wants each month, but  maybe I can control my purchasing even more this year.

Will you track your yearly spending? What have you learned from being a budgeting blogger this year?
